Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
