The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
