Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
