No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
