Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
